Chord Electronics – When Technology Takes Its Own Path

In the world of high-end audio, there are companies that seek to build on tradition. And then there are companies that, from the very beginning, choose their own path. Chord Electronics clearly belongs to the latter group.

It is a brand you can recognize almost immediately. Not only by its design, but above all by its way of thinking. Chord has never seemed like a company that watches what everyone else is doing and adjusts its products accordingly. Quite the opposite. It often comes up with solutions that may seem unusual at first glance, sometimes even controversial, but are almost always technically very well considered.

And that is exactly what I like about this British company.

Its Own Path

Chord Electronics was founded in 1989 by John Franks. From the beginning, the company focused strongly on its own technical solutions and gradually developed a very distinctive design philosophy.

Digital technology holds a special place in the brand's history. Chord Electronics' collaboration with Rob Watts brought a proprietary approach to digital-to-analogue conversion that differs fundamentally from the common use of off-the-shelf converter chips.

The result is equipment with its own technical and sonic identity.

But technology itself has never interested me very much.

It can be extraordinarily complex, contain thousands of components, and the manufacturer can write dozens of pages about it. In the end, only one thing matters to me:

What happens when I play music?

Detail Is Not Everything

With digital sound, people often talk about resolution, detail, dynamics or accuracy. All of that matters. But the sheer amount of detail does not yet create music.

In my view, a good digital component should not constantly remind the listener how technically perfect it is. It should not force you to listen to the converter, the filter or the recording technology.

It should gradually disappear.

And the music should remain.

This is where I see one of the most interesting qualities of the best Chord components. They can deliver an extraordinary amount of information, but their true purpose only becomes apparent when that information begins to create space, rhythm, instrumental colour and, above all, emotion.

High-End as I See It

Chord Electronics is also a good example of what high-end means to me.

High-end is not automatically the most expensive component in the room. It is not the number of kilograms, the size of the enclosure or the length of the technical specification.

Above all, it is an effort to take music reproduction further.

Sometimes through traditional solutions. Sometimes by taking a completely different route.

Chord chose the latter.

And perhaps that is precisely why it occupies such a distinctive position in the world of high-end audio today. Its products may not be for everyone. Its design may not appeal to everyone. But one thing is difficult to deny:

it has its own view of how music should be reproduced.

And in a world where many products are beginning to resemble one another, having a point of view of your own is becoming increasingly rare.
